2022 Dr Susan Lim Scholarship Award in Medicine


Applications are now available for the 2022 Dr Susan Lim Scholarship award in medicine, the scholarship offer is provided by the Dr Susan Lim Endowment for Education and Research Ltd at the University of New Castle.

Students and graduates who are suitably qualified are eligible to enter the Dr Susan Lim Scholarship in Medicine where it's open to students. The scholarship is part funded by the college.


The Dr Susan Lim Endowment for Education and Research Ltd awards scholarships for two scholars who have been accepted into the Combined Medical Program of the University of Newcastle for their 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th year of studies. The scholarship is intended to support medical students facing one or more areas of educational limitation and to make undergraduate medical education more accessible.

Dr Susan Lim is a worldwide, internationally recognized medical specialist in the field of surgical transplants. A Colombo Plan Scholar in 1979, Susan Lim majored in medicine at Monash University. She was awarded the G.B. Ong Gold Medal in General Surgery by the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, and the Gulbenkian Scholarship in 1984.

Blair holds a Fellowship at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, the American College of Surgeons, Trinity College, University of Melbourne, and the University of Newcastle.


To be eligible to apply for this scholarship you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled in 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th year of the Joint Medical Program with the University of Newcastle.
  • Be enrolled full-time.
  • Demonstrate satisfactory progression through your degree with no failed units.
  • Demonstrate impact of personal circumstances, such as carer, sole parent, financial hardship, English language difficulty, Indigenous Australian, long term medical condition or effects of abuse, disability, refugee status, regional/remote disadvantage.
  • Not have previously completed an Australian undergraduate degree program.
  • Not be the recipient of another University of Newcastle donor-funded or sponsored scholarship concurrently.

Documentation will need to be provided if your application isn't processed. Please provide all important documents in PDF format, DOC, DOCX, JPEG, or JPG prior to completing the online application process.

  • A personal statement (approx. 1 A4 page) outlining your academic achievements, career aspirations in the relevant area of study, and how this scholarship would assist you.
  • You may be required to provide documents to support your educational disadvantage claims. These will be identified when you apply based on your individual application responses.

The scholarship provides a total benefit of $7,500, paid as lump sums of $3,500 and $4,000 following semester 1 and semester 2 census dates.


Selection is a competitive process and will be based on assessment of the scholarship application and any required supporting documents. Academic progress over the course of your degree will be taken into account.
