Alvernia University is a private Franciscan Roman Catholic university in Reading, Pennsylvania. The university was formerly known as Alvernia College, it gained university status in 2008. It was founded in 1958 by the Bernardine Sisters of the Second Order of St. Francis first as a college for the sisters and then as a 4-year liberal arts college.


Although most of Francis Hall's renovated classrooms and offices were originally used as primary and secondary education centers before 1958, the building’s firstclassroom was built in 1926.


Alvernia University received its charter from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1960 and was officially approved in 1967 by the Commission on Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. In 1961, the institution opened its doors to lay female students. Then in 1971, It was the sole women-operated school in its category in the United States, and it instated its first male off-campus students, in 1973. The following year, it approved its first resident male students.


In 2008, Alvernia University celebrated the 50th anniversary of its founding and received university status from the Pennsylvania Department of Education. It offers more than 50 undergraduate majors and minors. Pre-professional programs are also available in six other areas, including dentistry, law, medicine, pharmacy, management, and social work. Master's degrees are awarded for studies in occupational therapy, business administration, nursing, community counseling, education, and liberal studies.


In addition, Alvernia University offers a Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT) program that lasts for seven full years. A Doctor of Philosophy in leadership is also available. Avernia College has affirmed I.U. and Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools standards for over 45 years. The Education program for teachers and students in the Pennsylvania education system is certified by the state department of education. The Occupational Therapy program is accepted by the American Council of Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE). The Bachelor of Science in Nursing is accredited by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).


The Commission on Accreditation for Allied Health Education Programs endorses the Athletic Training course for the Commission on Accreditation of Educational Programs in Athletic Training. The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) has granted accreditation to the Social Work course. Behavioral Health Department courses are approved by the Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine. The Accrediting Council for Business Schools and Programs, Inc., has authorized the Business Department.

The Alvernia University International Students Scholarships is awarded at varying amounts to recognize students at various levels of financial assistance. Indicative awards are from $10,000 to $22,000 per year.


Eligibility for Alvernia University International Students Scholarships


  • Alvernia University gives scholarships to each admitted international student and transfer undergraduate student wishing to enroll in one of our day undergraduate programs.
  • Alvernia University International Students Scholarships are awarded for up to four years of study, in full or in part, up to eight semesters. The scholarships cannot be combined with any other financial award, including a government financial aid.
  • To be eligible for the scholarship, you must be a full-time, degree program-seeking undergraduate student attending mostly daytime classes.
  • You must have earned a 3.0 grade point average by the May 1 application deadline and received minimum financial aid to be considered.
  • Financial and language proficiency are all requirements that applicants have to meet.
